TGGT vs. MG: Choosing the Right High-Temperature Wire
When your project involves extreme heat, standard PVC or THHN wire simply won’t cut it. You need specialized insulation that can withstand high temperatures without melting or becoming brittle. At Wire America, we specialize in two of the most common high-temp lead wires: TGGT and MG.
TGGT: The 250°C Workhorse
TGGT (Teflon, Glass-Tape, Glass-Braid, Teflon-Finish) is the go-to choice for commercial ovens, heaters, and industrial equipment.
-
Temperature Rating: 250°C (482°F).
-
Construction: Nickel-plated copper conductors with a combination of PTFE tape and fiberglass braiding.
-
Best For: Environments where moisture or chemicals are present alongside high heat.

MG: The 450°C Extreme Specialist
When 250°C isn't enough, MG (Mica-Glass Tape) is ideal. This cable is designed for the most demanding thermal environments like kilns, furnaces, and iron mills.
-
Temperature Rating: 450°C (842°F).
-
Construction: Nickel-plated copper wrapped in high-temp Mica tape, then covered in a fiberglass braid. The Mica acts as a fireproof barrier that maintains electrical integrity even under direct heat stress.
-
Best For: Dry, extreme-heat applications where the wire must survive temperatures nearly double that of TGGT.

Which One Do You Need?
Choosing between the two usually comes down to your maximum operating temperature. If you are wiring a standard commercial kitchen appliance, TGGT is likely your best bet. If you are wiring an industrial furnace or a glass-making kiln at 450°C, MG is the right choice.
At Wire America, we offer both TGGT and MG High Temp Wire by the foot shipped directly to your job-site.
