ALUMINUM URD 15kV-35kV

Aluminum URD Medium Voltage Cable is a highly reliable electrical cable for medium-voltage MV 90 (15kV to 35kV) power distribution in commercial, industrial, and utility environments. It features highly durable XLPE or EPR insulation and crucial metallic shielding to manage electrical stress and safely direct fault currents. Its tough, oil- and sunlight-resistant jacket makes it ideal for major feeder lines installed underground, aerially, or in cable trays, ensuring stable, long-term power transmission in demanding conditions. ALUMINUM URD 15kV-35kV MEDIUM VOLTAGE CABLE

Aluminum URD (Underground Residential Distribution) cable is a high-voltage primary distribution conductor engineered to transport power from substations to residential and commercial transformers. Designed for 15kV, 25kV, or 35kV applications, this cable features a sophisticated multi-layer construction: a 1350-H19 aluminum phase conductor, a semi-conducting conductor shield, high-dielectric Tree-Retardant Cross-Linked Polyethylene (TR-XLPE) or EPR insulation, and a semi-conducting insulation shield. The assembly is wrapped in a concentric neutral made of solid bare copper wires and encased in a rugged, sunlight-resistant Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) jacket. This robust design ensures maximum protection against "treeing" (insulation breakdown), moisture ingress, and mechanical stress in direct burial or duct applications.

Installation Note: Medium voltage cable installation requires specialized training and tools. Per NESC and IEEE standards, the cable must be "meggered" and "hi-pot" tested after installation but before being energized to ensure insulation integrity. Termination and splicing must be performed using specific high-voltage kits (cold-shrink or heat-shrink) that match the voltage rating and insulation diameter of the cable. Ensure the concentric neutral wires are properly gathered and grounded at each termination point to maintain system safety and prevent voltage build-up on the jacket.

Key Features
  • Primary Voltage Ratings: Available in 15kV, 25kV, and 35kV ratings to meet the specific requirements of utility-grade primary distribution.
  • TR-XLPE Insulation: Features Tree-Retardant Cross-Linked Polyethylene, which significantly inhibits the growth of "water trees" that can cause premature cable failure in damp underground environments.
  • Concentric Neutral Design: Wrapped with a specific count of solid bare copper wires to provide a reliable return path and satisfy grounding requirements.
  • Tri-Extruded Construction: The conductor shield, insulation, and insulation shield are extruded simultaneously (triple-extrusion) to ensure a contaminate-free interface and electrical stability.
  • Rugged LLDPE Jacket: Encased in a black, high-molecular-weight polyethylene jacket that provides superior abrasion resistance and protection against soil chemicals.
  • Full Shielding: Includes both conductor and insulation semi-conducting shields to maintain a uniform radial electric field and reduce internal electrical stress.
  • Industry Standards: Manufactured to meet or exceed ICEA S-94-649, AEIC CS8, and the applicable requirements of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
Common Applications
  • Underground Residential Distribution (URD): The standard cable used by utility companies to provide primary power to housing developments.
  • Commercial Power Feeders: Routing high-voltage power from the main grid to large commercial complexes and shopping centers.
  • Substation Primary Runs: Used for underground distribution circuits exiting utility substations.
  • Industrial Plant Distribution: Providing primary 15kV–35kV power to large-scale manufacturing facilities and refineries.
  • Wind and Solar Farms: Serving as the main collection cables to transport high-voltage energy from renewable generation sites to the grid.
  • Institutional Campus Power: Ideal for underground primary loops in hospitals, universities, and military bases.
  • Utility Grid Modernization: Used in undergrounding projects to replace aging overhead primary lines for increased storm resilience.
