SOLAR PV WIRE

Photovoltaic (PV) Wire, also known as solar wire, is a type of electrical wire used to connect solar panels to solar power systems in both residential and commercial installations.  It is manufactured in a copper or aluminum single conductor with an XLPE insulation and used for 600V, 1000V or 2000V applications.  Solar PV Wire is sunlight-resistant and direct burial rated. It carries a UL listing of UL4703. See our Solar Photovoltaic PV Wire Buyers Guide.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Wire

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) wire is a specialized single-conductor cable engineered to interconnect solar panels and link them to inverter systems in renewable energy arrays. Unlike standard building wire, PV wire is constructed with a thicker, high-performance Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulation that provides exceptional resistance to the harsh conditions found on rooftops and in ground-mount solar farms. Rated for 600V, 1000V, or 2000V, this cable is designed to withstand extreme UV radiation, ozone, and temperature fluctuations ranging from -40°C to 90°C. Its robust construction allows it to be used in both grounded and ungrounded photovoltaic systems, providing a durable, long-term solution for high-voltage DC power transmission in the most demanding outdoor environments.

Key Features
  • Extreme UV & Weather Resistance: Encased in sunlight-resistant XLPE insulation that prevents cracking and degradation from constant solar exposure.
  • Dual Rated Performance: Often dual-rated as RHW-2 or USE-2, allowing for versatile use in both conduits and direct burial applications.
  • High Voltage Capacity: Available in 600V, 1kV, and 2kV ratings to support the increased DC voltages of modern commercial and utility-scale solar arrays.
  • Wide Temperature Range: Specifically engineered to maintain electrical integrity in extreme cold (-40°C) and high-heat (90°C) environments.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Manufactured to meet UL 4703 standards for Photovoltaic Wire and compliant with NEC Article 690.
Common Applications
  • Solar Panel Interconnection: The primary cable used for "string" wiring to connect individual solar modules together within an array.
  • Inverter & Combiner Box Leads: Used to route high-voltage DC power from the solar array to combiner boxes and power inverters.
  • Utility-Scale Solar Farms: Ideal for large-ground-mount installations requiring long-distance, high-voltage DC feeders.
  • Residential Rooftop Systems: Provides a safe, code-compliant connection for home solar panels exposed to high rooftop temperatures.
  • Off-Grid Power Systems: Frequently utilized in remote cabin or RV solar setups for reliable battery charging and power distribution.
  • Battery Storage Connectivity: Used to link solar arrays to modern lithium-ion and lead-acid battery backup systems.
  • Commercial Solar Carports: Deployed in parking lot solar structures for durable, exposed-run wiring that resists mechanical abrasion.
