Standard wire like THHN or generic tray cable is not designed to handle pulse-width modulation (PWM) from Variable Frequency Drives. VFDs generate rapid high-voltage spikes (reflected waves) up to 1,800V and high-frequency noise (EMI). Standard PVC/THHN insulation breaks down under this stress, causing hotspots, pinhole leaks, and premature failure. VFD cable uses heavy-duty XLPE thermoset insulation and dual shielding (foil + tinned copper braid) to withstand these spikes and prevent signal interference with nearby control lines.

Symmetrical VFD cables feature three split ground wires placed evenly in the geometry between the phase conductors. This symmetrical alignment balances the magnetic field, reduces induced ground currents, and safely drains common-mode voltage back to the drive. This prevents destructive voltage from seeking a path through your motor bearings (preventing "fluting" and bearing failure) and extends overall motor lifespan.
