What is a Foil Shield?

A Foil Shield is a thin layer of aluminum or copper foil, typically laminated to a polyester backing (like Mylar®), wrapped around the conductors of a cable. Its primary purpose is to provide 100% electromagnetic interference (EMI) coverage, protecting sensitive signals from high-frequency "noise" and crosstalk.

Because the foil itself is very thin and fragile, it is almost always paired with a tinned copper drain wire. The drain wire stays in constant contact with the foil throughout the cable's length, making it easy to ground the shield at the termination point.

3. Lightweight and Low Profile

Foil shields are significantly thinner and lighter than braided or tape shields. This makes foil-shielded cables much easier to pull through tight conduits and allows for a smaller overall cable diameter—ideal for dense control panels.
