12/4 Stranded Copper MC Cable is a 600V metal-clad cable used for 3-phase 4-wire power distribution, 277V/480V commercial lighting, and multi-circuit branch wiring in commercial and industrial buildings. It features four 12 AWG stranded copper circuit conductors (Black/Red/Blue/White) and one 12 AWG green insulated ground enclosed in an aluminum interlocked armor.
12/3 MC Cable contains three current-carrying conductors (Black/Red/White) plus ground, making it suitable for single-phase 3-wire runs or 3-way switching. 12/4 MC Cable adds a fourth circuit conductor (Blue), enabling full 3-phase wye wiring (Black/Red/Blue/White) or running two separate 120V circuits with individual neutrals in a single cable pull.
Under NEC Section 240.4(D), 12 AWG copper conductors are generally restricted to a maximum overcurrent protection rating of 20 Amps for standard branch circuits, despite having a higher raw conductor thermal ampacity rating (30A at 90°C).
Yes, in certain installations. When all four conductors are carrying current simultaneously (such as two single-phase branch circuits sharing a single cable sheath), NEC Table 310.15(C)(1) requires an 80% adjustment factor on the conductor ampacity rating.
Yes. Because the aluminum interlocked armor provides continuous mechanical protection, MC cable is approved under NEC Article 330 to be installed directly inside walls, exposed across ceilings, or laid in cable trays without pulling through pipe or conduit.
Standard 12/4 MC cable with aluminum interlocked armor is designed for dry indoor applications (rated 90°C Dry). For direct burial or wet outdoor environments, a PVC-jacketed MC cable (PVC over armor) or liquid-tight raceway system is required.
