ACSR wire is a bare, stranded electrical conductor specifically designed for overhead power transmission and distribution lines. It combines the excellent electrical conductivity and lightweight properties of aluminum with the high tensile strength of a steel core. This unique construction allows it to efficiently carry electrical current over long spans while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing sag.

ACSR wire is constructed with a central core of one or more galvanized steel strands, which provides the mechanical strength. Surrounding this steel core are multiple layers of hard-drawn aluminum (typically 1350-H19) wires, concentrically stranded. The aluminum layers are responsible for conducting electrical current.

ACSR wire offers several key advantages for overhead power lines:

  • High Tensile Strength: The steel core provides superior mechanical strength, allowing for longer spans between support structures.
  • Excellent Conductivity: The outer aluminum strands ensure efficient electrical current transfer.

Selecting the correct ACSR wire involves evaluating several factors:

  • Electrical Requirements: Consider the required voltage, current (ampacity), and power capacity.
  • Mechanical Requirements: Assess span length, desired tension, sag limits, and potential environmental loads like wind and ice.
  • Environmental Conditions: Account for ambient temperature, solar exposure, and corrosive atmospheres, which may influence the need for specific steel core coatings or grease.
  • Standards Compliance: Ensure the chosen wire meets relevant industry standards like ASTM or IEC.

These are all types of aluminum conductors for overhead lines, but they differ in composition:

  • ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced): Features a steel core for high tensile strength, making it suitable for long spans and heavy loads.
  • AAC (All Aluminum Conductor): Made entirely of aluminum strands, offering excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, but with lower mechanical strength, typically used for shorter spans in urban areas.
  • AAAC (All Aluminum Alloy Conductor): Composed of aluminum alloy strands, providing a better balance of strength, conductivity, and corrosion resistance than AAC, and often better sag characteristics than AAC.

ACSR wire typically conforms to various national and international standards to ensure quality and performance. Common standards include:

  • ASTM B230: Aluminum 1350-H19 Wire for Electrical Purposes.
  • ASTM B232: Concentric-Lay-Stranded Aluminum Conductors, Coated-Steel Reinforced (ACSR).
  • ASTM B498: Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) Steel Core Wire for Use in Overhead Electrical Conductors.
  • IEC 61089: Round wire concentric lay overhead electrical stranded conductors (international standard).
  • BS EN 50182 / BS 215: British and European standards for overhead line conductors.

Standard ACSR wire, utilizing 1350-H19 aluminum, is generally rated for a continuous operating temperature of 75°C (167°F). Operating above this temperature can cause the aluminum to anneal and soften over time, reducing its mechanical integrity. For applications requiring higher continuous operating temperatures, other conductor types like ACSS (Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported) may be considered.

ACSR wire incorporates several features to resist corrosion:

  • Galvanized Steel Core: The steel core wires are typically coated with zinc (galvanized) in various classes (A, B, or C) to protect against rust and corrosion.
  • Aluminum-Clad Steel: Some constructions use aluminum-clad steel for enhanced corrosion resistance, especially in aggressive environments.
  • Aluminum Oxide Layer: The outer aluminum strands naturally form a protective oxide layer that helps shield the conductor from environmental degradation.
  • Grease Filling (Optional): For severe coastal or industrial atmospheres, the spaces between strands may be filled with a special grease to prevent moisture ingress and provide additional corrosion protection.

In North American practice, ACSR conductors are often identified by code words (e.g., Dog, Drake). However, technical datasheets and international standards frequently use a numerical designation, such as "26/7." In this format:

  • The first number (e.g., 26) indicates the total number of aluminum strands.
  • The second number (e.g., 7) indicates the total number of steel strands in the core.

This ratio helps define the balance between electrical conductivity (more aluminum) and mechanical strength (more steel).
