This composite cable is engineered specifically for mid-to-large residential standby generators, which are typically sized to provide "whole-home" backup. While smaller units can get by with 8 or 4 AWG, generators in the 20kW to 24kW range produce enough current to require a 100-amp circuit. By utilizing 3 AWG copper conductors, this cable ensures that your home’s heavy loads—such as multiple air conditioners and electric water heaters—can run simultaneously without the voltage drop or heat buildup that would occur with undersized wiring.

The "18/6C" portion of this cable contains the standard communication lines required by the most popular automatic transfer switches (ATS).

  • The "Brains" of the System: These six wires handle utility sensing (N1, N2), the 12V DC start/stop signal, and the battery charger circuit (T1).
  • Eliminates Multiple Pulls: Instead of pulling three large power wires, a ground wire, and then a separate control cable, this hybrid design lets you complete the entire electrical hookup in a single pass.
  • Compatibility: This 6-conductor configuration is the "gold standard" for standard Generac and Kohler installations, matching the terminal blocks found in the most common residential ATS models.

One of the biggest hurdles in generator wiring is the NEC rule prohibiting low-voltage wires from sharing a raceway with high-voltage power lines.

  • The Solution: This cable is fully code-compliant because the 18 AWG control wires are manufactured with the same 600V insulation as the 3 AWG power conductors.
  • Single Conduit Run: Because all internal wires are rated for the highest voltage present, you can legally run them in the same pipe or trench. This saves significant costs on conduit, connectors, and trenching labor.

Standby generators are mechanical engines that produce constant micro-vibrations while operating.

  • Fatigue Resistance: Unlike solid building wire, which can become brittle and crack over time when subjected to movement, the stranded annealed copper in this cable is highly flexible.
  • Secure Connections: Stranded wire provides a better "bite" in the mechanical lugs of the generator and transfer switch, ensuring that the 100-amp connection remains tight and low-resistance despite years of engine oscillation.

Since the run between your generator and your home is exposed to the elements, this cable is built for maximum protection.

  • TC-ER Rated: Often rated for Tray Cable - Exposed Run (TC-ER), it is rugged enough for both commercial and residential applications.
  • Weatherproof Jacket: The outer sheath is specifically formulated to resist UV damage from the sun and is moisture-resistant for burial in conduit.
  • Oil & Chemical Resistance: The jacket won't degrade if it comes into contact with engine oil, coolant, or common lawn chemicals, protecting the internal copper for the life of the generator.

The JP stands for Joist Pull. Certified under NEC 336.10(9) as Type TC-ER-JP, this cable has passed specialized UL laboratory testing for high structural strength and low outer-jacket friction. This means you can legally and smoothly pull this massive composite cable directly through wooden home joists and structural framing without the massive expense and labor of installing rigid conduit pipe.

Yes. The rugged, black outer PVC jacket is fully UL-approved for Direct Burial and is engineered with built-in Sunlight/UV Resistance. It is rated for 90°C wet or dry environments, allowing you to run it directly from inside a basement or utility room, drop it straight into an outdoor trench, and terminate it inside your outdoor generator enclosure or automatic transfer switch (ATS).
