The primary difference is NEC code compliance for residential structures. Standard quadruplex URD cable does not have a code-recognized insulation type (like RHW-2 or USE-2 printed on the individual wires) and usually features a yellow-striped neutral. MHF cable is specifically Type USE-2/RHH/RHW-2 rated, possesses a fully white neutral and a dedicated green ground conductor, and is legally permitted by the National Electrical Code (NEC Article 550) to enter the interior of a home to hook up to the main breaker panel.
Yes, absolutely. MHF is a Type USE-2 (Underground Service Entrance) cable engineered with rugged Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. It is explicitly rated for direct burial in the earth without the need for conduit for the main trench run.
Pro Tip: While the horizontal run in the trench can be direct-buried, you must protect the cable with a rigid conduit (like Schedule 80 PVC) where it transitions out of the ground up to the meter pedestal and where it enters the home's foundation
According to NEC Table 300.5, the standard burial depth for direct-buried MHF cable (rated up to 600V) is 24 inches deep in normal soil. If you choose to run the entire length of the MHF cable inside a approved PVC conduit system, in many jurisdictions, the minimum burial depth requirement drops to 18 inches.
Note: Always check with your local electrical inspector, as some municipal jurisdictions have stricter trench depth requirements.
Mobile Home Feeder (MHF) cable is a heavy-duty underground service entrance cable specifically designed to supply electrical power from an outdoor service pedestal or meter main to the distribution panelboard inside a mobile home or manufactured home. It features a quadruplex design consisting of two phase conductors (black), a neutral conductor (marked with a yellow stripe), and a dedicated grounding wire, making it fully code-compliant for safe, direct-burial power delivery. While engineered for manufactured homes, its cost-effectiveness makes this cable highly popular for running 100-Amp sub-panels to detached garages, workshops, and barns.
The amp rating for 2-2-4-6 Aluminum MHF is 100 Amps (Direct Burial / 90°C Wet or Dry Locations)
