10/2 Stranded Copper MC Cable is a 600V metal-clad cable used for 30A branch circuits, commercial HVAC equipment, dedicated machinery feeds, and long circuit runs requiring voltage-drop compensation. It features two 10 AWG stranded copper circuit conductors (Black/Red) and one 10 AWG green insulated ground enclosed in an aluminum interlocked armor.
12/2 MC Cable uses 12 AWG conductors and is typically paired with 20A breakers for standard lighting and receptacle circuits. 10/2 MC Cable uses larger 10 AWG conductors, allowing it to be paired with 30A breakers or used on long 20A runs to prevent voltage drop over distance.
Under NEC Section 240.4(D), 10 AWG copper conductors are generally restricted to a maximum overcurrent protection rating of 30 Amps for standard branch circuits, despite having a higher raw thermal ampacity rating (40A at 90°C).
Yes. Because the aluminum interlocked armor provides continuous mechanical protection, MC cable is approved under NEC Article 330 to be installed directly inside walls, exposed across ceilings, or laid in cable trays without pulling through pipe or conduit.
Standard 10/2 MC cable with aluminum interlocked armor is designed for dry indoor applications (rated 90°C Dry). For direct burial or wet outdoor environments, a PVC-jacketed MC cable (PVC over armor) or liquid-tight raceway system is required.
Aluminum armor is significantly lighter in weight than steel armor—reducing freight costs, easing structural load on cable trays, and making jobsite pulls much faster for field installation crews—while maintaining full impact and crush protection.
